"But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus." - Philippians 4:19
@davidblackmastro put up a post about the results of the three top Continental Style lifters at the World Championship held in Vienna, October 3, 1909. It sure seemed the Two Hand Snatches numbers were a bit anemic. Was this due to having so much 'beef' around their midsections?? I think looking at the original style of Two Hand Snatch will give us some clues. 1) Arms PARALLEL! How would you like to Snatch this way in a meet? 2) Much shorter pre-olympic style plates like we see today. The first tall 20kg plates came in 1920 when Berg Hantel introduced their World Record Weight Set, setting the standard for plate height and rotating sleeve diameter pretty much the same over a century later. Having a big gut and trying to pull 300+lb on a bar less than 6" off the floor is probably the main reason the Continental Style was adopted early on. If the Olympic set wasn't introduced, Cleans wouldn't have become popular enough to become the standard today. 3) short bars without rotating sleeves fight you like an Olympic bar never would. Try a training cycle of Snatches & Cleans on a Standard barbell, and you will run crying tears of joy back to your regular Olympic set when the cycle is finished. 4) Snatches were performed with little to NO DIP so we're basically talking a MUSCLE SNATCH! I show an example of what this original style Two Hand Snatch may have looked like. I'm only using 139½lb(63kg), but it certainly put me to work. Really IS impressive what them Olde Time Strongmen lifted when you know the details. God Bless.
#jesussaves #originalsnatch #weightlifting #oldtimestrongman
