Riding to the edge of town <br />For one last look, <br />One last showdown <br />Into the darkened sky of memory. <br />To breathe in the comfort of hometown breeze <br />And wistfully recall the 'could have beens', <br />The 'should have beens'. <br />Racing brain energies clinging to every sunny day curtain call. <br />Too much to gather at a glance. <br />Too strong an emotion to sever ties <br />With auld lang syne. <br />The lake is a stranger, <br />And the forest paths are cul de sacs. <br />Old heartbeats die hard <br />For thoughts of dance halls and road trips. <br />It seems so distant, this farewell to arms, <br />But it is enough to know <br />That these miles were traveled well- <br />They were caressed in spontaneity <br />Through the eyes of a dreamer, <br />And the dream lives on forever.<br /><br />william upton<br /><br />http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/forever-young-26/
