A man kills an over 18-foot long Burmese python.

Stemming from a simple coincidence, a Miami man now holds the record for killing the longest Burmese python ever captured in Florida. On May 11th, Jason Leon had been driving late at night when something caught his attention.

Approximately 3 feet of a snake’s body was sticking out from a section of bushes near the road. Leon, who was fortunately experienced in the handling of a Burmese python, was able to drag the shockingly huge creature away from its hiding spot.

In total, the female serpent measured exactly 18 feet and 8 inches long. It weighed 128 pounds.

The snake wrapped itself around Leon’s legs, prompting him to call for help. He was able to use a knife to kill the reptile.

Earlier this year, a vacationing family in Florida was surprised to see a massive, 17-foot Burmese python creep across the Everglades picnic area. A park ranger arrived on the scene and killed the creature with a shotgun.

The incident came just before the state’s Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission hosted the 2013 Python Challenge.
