A fire at a granary in northeast China has wiped out around $16 million of grain (100 million yuan), state media reported on Saturday (June 1).

The fire broke out at around 13:15 (0515GMT) on Friday (May 31) at a large open-air national granary in Daqing in Heilongjiang Province, China's state television CCTV reported.

The fire destroyed an estimated 53,000 tons of grain but no casualties have been reported so far, CCTV said.

Local authorities told CCTV that the fire was finally extinguished on Saturday morning, an operation made more difficult by high temperatures and windy weather.

An investigation is underway to find out how the fire started, state Xinhua news agency said.
