A US Army sergeant has pleaded guilty to killing 16 Afghan civilians in cold blood last year under a deal that spares him from the death penalty. 39-year-old Robert Bales now faces a life term in prison for the killings in Kandahar, but a military court will decide if he will ever be eligible for parole.
