Media mogul Rupert Murdoch and his third wife Wendi Deng are to split as the marriage has "irretrievably broken down" according to his spokesman.

The couple married in 1999. Ms. Deng who is 38 years younger than her husband famously leapt to his defence to slap a protester who threw a pie at him as British MPs quizzed the News Corp boss over phone-hacking.
