Brazil's biggest protests in 20 years appear to be making their mark.

An estimated 15, 000 turned out in the north-eastern city of Fortaleza on Wednesday.

Car tyres and some vehicles were set alight.

Police fired tear gas despite calls for restraint.

Brazil's Confederations Cup match against Mexico in the city didn't escape the protests.

Fans inside the stadium brandished placards to show their support for the demonstrators outside.

In Brazil's two largest cities, Sao Paolo, and Rio de Janeiro, officials backed down on planned public transport fare rises that ignited the backlash.
