Yet another highly adaptable insect has touched down to terrorize summer fun seekers. The Asian Tiger Mosquito has been spotted attacking residents of New Jersey.

Characterized as having black and white striped bodies and legs, the pest was first noted in 1995 and has considerably expanded its territory since.

Part of the reason it’s flourishing is that it’s managed to adjust to the area’s climate.

It’s also managed to displace a more benign type of mosquito that tended to only attack birds.

The Asian Tiger variety is expected to be more efficient at spreading diseases due to the fact it’s both highly aggressive and open to making a meal of people at all hours of the day and night.

It is a known link in the chain of numerous viral diseases – among them are West Nile, and eastern equine encephalitis.

Officials say some residents are to blame and point out that even a stray bottle cap holds enough water to keep mosquito larvae happy and healthy until they’ve grown.
