George Zimmerman was declared not guilty by a Florida jury after the prosecution was unable to prove he was guilty of murdering Trayvon Martin in the second degree.

The state erred in opting for the charge with the higher burden of proof. Special prosecutor Angela Corey and her team failed miserably. Corey should have asked for manslaughter at the outset, instead of the final stages when it just looked like a last-minute gamble.

Zimmerman was acquitted of all charges in the criminal case but could still face civil penalties. Clearly, Martin gave Zimmerman a beatdown. But was deadly force justified if Martin was only exercising self-defense?
