Elon Musk, one of the masterminds behind PayPal, Tesla Motors, and SpaceX, has announced he has a way to build a ground transit system that could get commuters from LA to San Francisco in 30 minutes or less. He calls it the Hyperloop.

Elon Musk is one of the masterminds behind Tesla Motors, Paypal and SpaceX.

He likes to tackle the big challenges and next one on his list is transporation.

He wants to build a ground transit system that could get commuters from LA to San Francisco in 30 minutes or less. He calls it the Hyperloop.

Musk said he was inspired when he heard about California’s plans to build what he characterized as the slowest and most expensive high-speed rail system in the world.

He describes his concept as, “cross between a Concorde and a railgun and an air hockey table." Further, he believes he can deliver it at a tenth the cost, although he’s acknowledged his math may be a little off.

The Hyperloop could even reportedly be self-powered and generate more energy than it uses.

It’s been estimated that the Hyperloop would have to work at about 700 miles per hour to make Musk’s 30 minute promise. (

If the hyperloop becomes a reality, it could radically transform the way world travels.
