STORY: Paris sweltered on Friday as temperatures soared, driving tourists and locals to bathe in fountains in front of the Eiffel tower to escape the heat.

After a gloomy month of June, the weather perked up in recent days with temperatures topping 30 degrees on Friday afternoon, according to weather service Meteo France.

Sun-kissed locals took advantage of the sun in the city's parks, ahead of the opening of annual beach festival "Paris Plage" this weekend.

In the shadow of the iconic Eiffel tower, bolder residents ignored the warning signs to risk dips in the Trocadero fountain.

With Meteo-France warning of a heatwave for the coming days, Parisians are unlikely to pack away their swimming gear for at least a week.
