In the newly released photos taken by the Cassini spacecraft, the Earth and moon appear to be two tiny dots.
On Earth, we use the word 'massive' quite often to describe oceans, buildings, stadiums, and so on. But it's all relative in the context of the Universe we live in.
Our home planet was recently captured from millions of miles away. In the newly release photo, our planet looks like just a tiny dot. The image was taken on July 19. It was taken about 900 million miles away by the Cassini spacecraft exploring the Saturn system.
Cassini has been conducting explorations around Saturn in recent times. The spacecraft has spent a good deal of time examining and probing the moons of Saturn.
In the photos, the Earth is a pale blue circle while the moon is seen as a stark white dot. A Cassini project scientist stated “We can't see individual continents or people in this portrait of Earth, but this pale blue dot is a succinct summary of who we were on July 19. Cassini's picture reminds us how tiny our home planet is in the vastness of space.”
The Earth's first ever image from a spacecraft was taken in 1966 by the Lunar Orbiter 1.
