Authorities in Fremont, California are offering a pay-to-stay jail for inmates. As part of a program, prisoners sentenced to misdemeanor crimes, who are in Alameda County facilities can now spend their time in a less-crowded and slightly cleaner jail in Fremont, for a fee, totaling $155 per night.

Prison isn’t a place where many people would want to spend a night. But that’s not stopping authorities in Fremont, California from offering a pay-to-stay jail for inmates.

As part of a program, prisoners sentenced to misdemeanor crimes, who are in Alameda County facilities can now spend their time in a less-crowded and newer jailin Fremont, for a fee, totaling $155 per night.

A police authority stated “It's still a jail; there's no special treatment. They get the same cot, blanket and food as anybody in the county jail, except that our jail is smaller, quieter and away from the county jail population.”

While the accommodations aren’t exactly luxurious, the prison does have a widescreen, high definition TV with cable and game tables. The building alone cost approximately 10 million dollars to construct. It was originally supposed to hold minimum security prisoners, who would work around the property.

However those plans didn’t go through and the city was left with a brand new, seldom used jail.

If the unique program proves to be a success, it will generate some serious revenue for Fremont.
