When it comes time to take off some extra pounds, men and women have some very different ways of going about it.

When it comes time to take off some extra pounds, men and women have different ways of going about it.

According to new research, those differences are a combination of both social and biological causes.

In the study it was noted that men tend to prefer to diet secretly, even if they’re in a program. Also, they look at their food options as simple 'can and can’t' eat decisions.

Women, on the other hand, prefer group settings and a support network. They’re also more likely to negotiate into the grey areas of dieting, like taking full advantage of cheat days they’ve allotted themselves.

The stronger willpower men seem to exhibit may come from a combination of biological factors.

For one, they often have more muscle mass, which allows for greater calorie burning.

Men also tend to show less emotionally motivated brain activity when in the presence of tempting foods, likely making it easier for them to pass on them.

When signing up for diet plans, women usually pick those that offer emotional support and understanding while men look for societal and celebrity endorsements.
