"Riddick" dethrones "The Butler" at the box office

"Riddick" starring Vin Diesel pushes "The Butler" from the number one spot at the box office.

The sci-fi flick topped the the U.S. and Canadian box office charts over the weekend, dethroning three-time winner, "The Butler."

Diesel returns to the role of a glowing-eyed ex-convict who can see in the dark that he played in films back in 2000 and 2004.

It's this weekend's only new nationwide release, ringing up $18.7 million in ticket sales.

Meanwhile, "Lee Daniels' The Butler," a civil-rights drama, pulled in $8.9 million.

It stars Forest Whitaker as a White House butler to eight U.S. presidents, and TV talk show host Oprah Winfrey, who plays his boozing wife.
