Thanks to a bizarre building code, homeowners in Pittsburgh are receiving citations for parking on their own property.

There’s nothing like owning your own home. Park wherever you want, make as much noise as you please, it’s the American dream.

But in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, it may be better to have a house without a driveway. Thanks to a bizarre building code, homeowners are receiving citations for parking on their own property.

The ordinance which had been rarely used is being increasingly put into effect.

The Pittsburgh Bureau of Building Inspection will issue citations after a resident is notified of the code once a complaint is received. Driveways without a $225 zoning variance and permit are the target.

The ordinance basically states that special permits are required for a car to park within 30 feet of a street.

Depending on the district of the offense, fines can range anywhere from $1,000 to $2,300. One local resident, 45-year-old Eileen Freedman received a warning for parking in her own driveway.

She has since moved her vehicle to the street but stated ”It's ridiculous, and it doesn't make our city look very smart.” A local councilman is currently looking into having the ordinance changed.
