After 31 years, Mike Bowen’s mission to run one mile for every fallen Vietnam Veteran is coming to a close.

For most of us, running tens of thousands of miles in our lifetime may seem like a difficult endeavor.

After 31 years, Mike Bowen’s mission to run one mile for every fallen Vietnam Veteran is coming to a close.

He’ll be finishing the 58,282-mile run in Washington DC, which is where it began.

Inspiration for the undertaking came to Bowen during a visit to the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial Wall.

He pledged, "Never again will one generation of veterans abandon another. That's what we do - we make sure that the guys coming home - whether they're alive or dead or wounded - will be treated with dignity and respect."

Bowen was also motivated by the loss of 8 of his friends to the Vietnam War.

It’s their sacrifice that has helped to keep Bowen going forward despite personal setbacks.

Among them was a bout with cancer.

According to the runner, he stayed strong and after finishing chemo and radiation he fought to get back in shape and finish what he started.

For the grand finale, Bowen will be travelling to Washington DC via motorcycle with about 50 friends.
