Many people associate the fall season with cooler breezes and the beautiful colors of the changing leaves. In Japan, Hitachi Seaside Park is covered with large herb brushes that make the landscape look like a crimson sea when its colors change. Along with flowers in full bloom, it makes for an amazing experience.
That herb that grows in clusters is called “kochia,” and the 36,000 brushes are each around 35 inches tall. While they are a pretty shade of green for most of the year, they begin turning red from late September through mid-October. After that, they shift through pinks and light browns before returning to green.
A very popular attraction for both locals and tourists in the kochia’s peak time of late September through mid-October, the park also has a flower called “cosmos” that blooms around the same time the kochia turns red. The cosmos in the park appear in shades of pink, white, and red.
The park uses kochia simply for its beauty even though some people use it in herbal medicines and as food.
