Police ended a hostage standoff at a city hall in Ingolstadt, Germany on August 19. The kidnapper was shot and arrested while the two hostages were freed unharmed.
It was reported that the kidnapper was later known armed with a plastic gun which looked like a real weapon and a big knife, which prompted the police to open fire at him. The kidnapper was wounded in the shoulder and legs and was rushed to a hospital.
The kidnapper reportedly had been banned from entering city hall because he was stalking one of its female employees, which was believed to be one of the people he was holding hostage.
According to Reuters, Chancellor Angela Merkel cancelled two election rallies in Ingolstadt and Regensburg due to the hostage crisis. Merkel had been due to appear in the two cities as part of a campaign tour that will see her pass through over 50 German towns and cities ahead of the September 22 election. However, officials said there was no connection between the hostage-taking and Merkel's visit.
