Floyd "Money" Mayweather Jr. will receive a record breaking purse of $41.5 million for his junior middleweight unification showdown against Mexican superstar and fellow titleholder Saul "Canelo" Alvarez on Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
If the fight does a full 12 rounds, Mayweather will make about $19,212 per second or about $1.15 million per minute. Mayweather's guarantee is $10 million more than his previous fight with Robert Guerrero, which was the previous record.
Alvarez will earn $12.5 million, more than any other boxer who's fought in the USA this year outside of Mayweather. The live gate will produce $19,905,000, beating Mayweather's MGM Grand fight in 2007 against Oscar De La Hoya by about $1.5 million.
Last Saturday during a conference call to promote the fight, Mayweather was happy to admit that his undefeated record has been partially built on handpicking opponents, who may have not been hardest opponents, but did help Money become the world's highest paid athlete.
Mayweather has been criticized in the past for trying to dodge particular fighters, most notably, Filipino fighter Manny "Pac-Man" Pacquiao. Mayweather and Pacquiao have attempted several times to arrange a bout, but each time negotiations between the two camps break down.
The Alvarez fight is the second in Mayweather's six fight, 30-month contract with Showtime that could pay him upwards of $200 million.
Who do you think will come out on top on Saturday? The newcomer or the old veteran. And if Mayweather and Pacquiao do ever get together for a fight, who's your pick?
