A building collapse in northern Egypt killed at least two people on Sunday, August 25. More are feared trapped under rubble as rescue workers search for survivors.

The collapse occurred in the Sidi Gaber district of Alexandria, on Egypt's Mediterranean. It was afternoon and construction was being carried out next to a seven-storey building.

Residents noticed cracks appear in walls and rushed outside. General Mohamed Nassar, head of the city's Civil Defence Department said some people may not have made it out in time. Rescue teams are searching for survivors among the rubble.

Alexandria has witnessed a number of deadly building collapses this year. One on January 16 killed 28 people. Breaches of building codes are frequent in Egypt and often blamed for sudden collapses.
