Students and professors at universities across the United States are reportedly not checking their email as much as they used to.

Some students say that text messaging is faster and easier than using email and some reportedly never check their university email address.

One study from Purdue University said that students are only checking their email for six minutes a day, out of an average 123 minutes a day spent on the computer.

Eric Stoller, a social media and communication consultant for universities said: “We have this perception that because students are fluent with things like smartphones and downloading music that they are born with chips embedded in them that make them technology wizards. They are no better at managing e-mail than anyone else.”

Paul Jones, a professor from the University of North Carolina who helped write some of the code to create the university email system, has given up having an email address, but continues to use other communication outlets.

But in some scenarios, email does seem to have a use. When given a choice about how to be notified of changes to a reading assignment, 98 percent of students at Brown University chose email as their preferred method.
