Rescue crews continued to clean up on Wednesday (October 2) after parts of eastern Australia were hit by high winds, damaging homes and bringing down power lines on Tuesday (October 1).

In parts of Melbourne, homes and vehicles were damaged by fallen trees after the city was battered by the strongest wind storm for three decades, leaving up to 90,000 homes without power, the Seven Network reported.

In Sydney, winds reached up to 135 kilometres (83 miles) an hour tearing roofs of houses.

A man died after he was electrocuted on the roof of his house trying to carry out repairs, said the Nine Network.

Local media reported that power was restored to most homes after additional emergency crews were called in.
