Five people died after they were buried by a rockslide in the Colorado mountains on Monday, according to local reports.

The unidentified hikers were on a trail to Agnes Vaille Falls when the rockslide happened at about 11 am.

"It was totally unexpected. It caught everybody by surprise," said Chaffee County Undersheriff John Spezze, according to a report by the Associated Press.

Boulders, some the size of cars, crashed downward onto the popular central Colorado hiking trail, leaving a football-field-sized gash below Mount Princeton, a 14,197-foot peak.

"At the time, when rescue people went into the slide, where we felt like the people were, they encountered rocks falling and more rocks sliding," John Spezze, Chaffee County Undersheriff, told CBS4.

Authorities were notified by a female hiker who called for help.

A 13-year-old girl survived the slide with a broken leg and other injuries and was airlifted to a Denver children's hospital.

The area has been deemed unstable, but Chaffee County Sheriff Pete Palmer expects rescue operations to resume Tuesday morning.

"We will go back in as soon as the area can be declared safe for the search teams," Palmer said, according to the USA Today.
