Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania’s Positive Psychology Center studied the frequency of different words used by men and women in their Facebook status updates and found some stereotypical results.

Women mostly posted about shopping or their hair, while men mostly posted about sports, war and video games.

The results of the study showed that women used more words conveying their emotions, like the word excited, and men used significantly more swearwords in their status updates.

Also, men reportedly used the possessive word ‘my’ when referring to their girlfriend or wife more than women did when posting about their boyfriend or husband.

The researchers took their results from the analysis of 700 million words in the status updates of 75 thousand volunteer subjects.

They also compared the word frequency in Facebook status updates based on age and personality type.

The study was done as part of the World Well-Being Project that is working to measure the relative happiness of people in a certain area by the words they are using in social media communications like Twitter or Facebook.

What do you think about the results of the study?
