Canadian authorities have opened a criminal investigation into the train derailment in Lac-Megantic that has killed at least 13 people, with up to 50 still missing.
Authorities are investigating what caused the train to roll downhill some 11 kilometres at an uncontrollable speed, causing it to derail and its crude oil cargo to explode and incinerate the downtown area of the Quebec township.
Spokesman for the company that owns the train have levied blame at local volunteers firefighters who attended a blaze in the train's locomotive earlier in the night.
