Azerbaijan president reelected without surprise
It came as no great surprise on Wednesday when Azerbaijan’s outgoing head of state Ilham Aliyev was re-elected for a third term as president, securing close to 85 % of votes…
Critics say his victory was a forgone conclusion. As this screen shot posted to the site Meydan.tv which is run by regime opponents would attest, the Election Commission’s smartphone application accidentally announced Aliyev as the landslide election winner, well before polling offices had even opened.
The company that developed the app tried to explain the mistake in a statement posted to their website claiming the figures released were part of the testing process, and nothing to do with Wednesday’s ballot.
But Azerbaijani activists and citizens are far from convinced and have taken to social networks to denounce voting irregularities. In this video, apparently filmed in the capital Baku, a man claims that dead people were included in the electoral lists so votes could be cast in their name.
These pictures were reportedly taken in the city of Shamkir and have been doing the rounds on the local web. They appear to show polling station officials busy ballot stuffing.
The main opposition candidate, Jamil Hasanli, who had around 5% of votes, has posted these and similar documents to his Facebook page, condemning the numerous voting irregularities and saying he does not accept the electi... Go on reading on our web site.
