Saudi women defy driving ban
This video has been widely shared by web users in Saudi Arabia. Filmed last week, we see a fully veiled woman driving around Riyadh, defying the kingdom’s ban on women driving. Other motorists she passes along the way show their support by giving her the thumbs up.
In this ultra conservative kingdom, where women must have a male guardian and ask for permission if they want to travel for example, or open a bank account, more and more women now want the right to drive, and have been demanding as much in videos and photos posted online. Something which has in some cases got them into trouble with police, or alienated them from religious leaders…
One Saudi cleric, alarmed by the scale of the movement, recently warned women that driving would affect their ovaries and cause birth defects in their children. His comments sparked a wave of mockery online and the campaign to end the ban on women driving in Saudi Arabia is now about to gain further ground.
Activists are planning a nationwide day of defiance against the ban on October 26th. There is also a petition circulating online which has garnered over 15,000 signatures appealing to the government to give Saudi women the green light, so they can finally get a license and get behind the wheel.
