Australia's immigration minister announced on Friday the launch of an inquiry into the escape of seven detainees from an immigration detention facility in northern Queensland, according to a Daily Telegraph report.

The escape occurred at Scherger Immigration Detention Center near Weipa in Northern Queensland.

The seven detainees, all Vietnamese nationals, made their way out of the remote immigration detention center in the early hours of the morning.

They are believed to have climbed over the compound's perimeter fence.

Allegedly aided in their get away by five others, six of the detainees then boarded a plane to Cairns, 400 km away.

The incident marked the first escape from the two-year-old centre, according to Weipa mayor Peter McCulkin.
