At least 39 people were killed when an overcrowded bus carrying more than 70 passengers skidded off a road and plunged into a river in northern India on Wednesday.
The bus was travelling to Ani town from Kullu when it fell into the turbulent Beas River in Jhiri district in the mountainous Himachal Pradesh state. Police say negligent driving was the cause of the accident. The driver was reported to be on his mobile phone before the accident and managed to jump off the bus just before it plunged into the river.
Sources say at least 17 passengers have been rescued from the wreckage of the bus. Officials expect the death toll to rise as missing victims may have been swept away and drowned.
Road accidents are common in India due to poor road quality and rash driving. It was reported that more than 110,000 people are killed on the country's roads each year.
