Africa faces an environmental disaster: a mountain of plastic waste is contaminating farmland and poisoning the environment. Now, with a pioneering project, Burkina Faso is leading the way to a cleaner future.
The capital of Burkina Faso has been named "Cleanest City in Africa" three times, mainly thanks to the women's cooperatives managing the city's recycling. "We clean the city, fight poverty and raise awareness", says Oumou Traore, with some pride. In one of the poorest nations in the world the signs of progress are heartening. "We have verified that there is progress. People's behaviour and habits have changed!"
