Anonymous hacks Australia's top spy agency

Views 9

Anonymous 2013: Citing obtained by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper reported earlier this month that as part of a US-led spying network, Australia is using its embassies in Asia, including in Jakarta, to eavesdrop on local officials.

Patriotic Indonesian hackers rallying together under the banner Anonymous Indonesia retaliated somewhat lamely by defacing the websites of some 170 small business in Australia, apparently chosen at random or for their relative ease to hack. Among them were a dry cleaning concern and a children's cancer charity. The Australian chapter of Anonymous responded with a threatening video enjoining Indonesian hackers to target the government agencies responsible for the electronic eavesdropping.

The hackers then launched a distributed denial of service (DDOS) attack on Australia's peak foreign intelligence agency, ASIS, knocking it offline and humiliating the agency.

With unresolved tensions over Australia's policy of sending refugee boats back to Indonesia, and now spying allegations, it remains to be seen how well Prime Minister Tony Abbott will handle the relationship with Indonesia.
