Renisha McBride, 19, was shot and killed while seeking help after a traffic accident rendered her car inoperable. She was presumed to be asking for assistance when she knocked on a door of a Dearborn Heights, Michigan home around 2:30am early Saturday morning. Instead of a kind and understanding soul, what greeted her instead was the barrel of a shotgun. As she turned to flee, the homeowner shot and killed her at the scene.
Police responding to the scene found McBride's body on the front porch of the
homeowner's home. Police have interviewed homeowner who insists "the gun accidentally went off", that however can not explain why the crime was reported hours later by neighbors and not the homeowner himself.
Some are speculating this is another case of "self-defense gone wrong" and that the homeowner may use Michigan's self-defense law, which bears a resemblance to Florida's Stand-Your-Ground law that was used in the infamous Treyvon Martin/George Zimmerman case.
Others, including McBride's aunt and friends, are insisting this is yet another case of an African-American in need who was killed for no reason, and outrage is being expressed in the form of online comments along with demonstrations and protests near the scene of the crime.
The Dearborn Heights police seem to have sided with McBride's family in that respect and have asked the Wayne County Prosecutor to file charges against the resident who shot her, but more time is needed in order for all parties involved to give a complete and concise picture.
