Italy: court reveals reasons behind Berlusconi's conviction in 'Ruby' case

Proof that former Italy prime minister Silvio Berlusconi paid for sex with dancer Karima El Mahroug, known as “Ruby,” has been released by a court in Milan.

The court document explains that Berlusconi lavished Ruby, who was 17 at the time, with considerable sums of money and other items such as jewellery in exchange for sexual relations.

The former premier was convicted in June for having sex with an underage prostitute and abuse of power. He was sentenced to seven years in jail and banned from public office.

The 77-year-old is considered unlikely to see the inside of a prison cell, due to his age.

The Italian Senate is set to vote next week on whether he is to be stripped of his life-long seat.
