The day began with a somber tribute at the Eternal Flame over President John F. Kennedy's gravesite.
His sister, Ambassador Jean Kennedy Smith, paused to honor the former president who was assassinated 50 years ago.
Visitors filed past his final resting place throughout the day.
All across Washington D.C., flags were lowered to half-staff in remembrance of the 50th anniversary.
In Dallas, thousands braved the bitter cold and rain to attend the city's first official ceremony to mark Kennedy's assassination.
