A Virginia man may be making $150 monthly payments to the state transportation department until he’s 87 for racking up 335 unpaid toll violations.

If there are no attendants standing by, you may be tempted to drive through the toll lanes without paying. A Virginia man, who may be making monthly payments to the state transportation department until he’s 87, would tell you: “don’t do it.”

33-year old Jason Bourcier was told the cameras weren’t on as he drove the Dulles toll road late at night for work in 2009. So, he went through without paying.

After a month, he got a bill listing $50 for unpaid tolls and $1,200 for administrative fees. He tried to negotiate, but EZ Pass would not go lower than $800. Bourcier didn’t pay it and continued to use the lanes thinking he could force them to go lower. Instead, he received a summons for each violation.

Bourcier received 335 violations and, with late fees and interest, owed $202,000. After being taken to court, he settled for $40,000 plus $55,000 in fees and interest. Had he paid the original tolls, it would have cost him only $440.

Bourcier wants to see legal change limiting how much can be charged in fees. He pointed out, “There are no injured parties here…There are people who get convicted for DUI crashes, and they don't face this.”
