On a day marking a tragedy in Ukraine’s past, protesters in Kiev have denounced the government’s U-turn over EU integration.

They believe the country’s future will suffer from the decision to drop plans for a landmark deal with the EU and instead revive ties with Russia.

Among those attending a rally in the central square was World Heavyweight Boxing Champion and opposition leader Vitali Klitschko.

“They stole hope for the future” he told the crowd. “They promised a better life but no, there will be no changes, no reforms. It will just be the same.”

On Saturday, President Viktor Yanukovich and others in Ukraine marked the 80th anniversary of the Holodomor, a Soviet-era famine that the country’s parliament has labelled an act of genocide by the Stalin regime. Millions died.

As for the future, opinion polls indicate many are still undecided about which way their country should turn.
