Four killed, scores injured in Bronx train derailment

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo confirmed that four people were killed and 63 others injured after a Metro North passenger train derailed in the Bronx on Sunday (December 1 ) morning.

All seven cars of the passenger train came off the track near an embankment just south of the Spuyten Duyvil station shortly after 7 a.m. (EST), officials said at a Sunday news conference near the site of the derailment.

Eleven of the injuries were serious, officials said.

Governor Cuomo said it was too soon to speculate on the cause of the crash.

"What we do know is four people lost their lives today in the holiday season right after Thanksgiving and they are in our thoughts and prayers," Cuomo said.

New York Fire Department Chief Ed Kilduff told reporters that emergency crews had to use airbags under the train to remove some of the critically injured.
