Like so many other nations, Cuba lowers its flags to half-staff for the late Nelson Mandela.
Cuba holds the former South African president in high regard.
After his release from prison in 1991, Mandela visited the island nation where then-President Fidel Castro awarded him the Jose Marti Order.
His passing comes as the FARC rebel group continues peace talks with the Colombian government, whose negotiator called Mandela an inspiration.

"Nelson Mandela is a guide and model for these talks. He is the man who broke paradigms and managed to propel his country towards peace, by working, precisely with his enemies, next to his enemies, trying to convince them, looking for ways, which is what we are doing in Havana, looking for ways to peace."
