STORY: U.S. director David O. Russell was honored at the Capri, Hollywood Film Festival on December 11 in Italy.

The Oscar nominated filmmaker was given the Capri Master of Cinematic Art Award before the start of the festival which runs from December 27 to January 2.

After receiving the award for his 2012 film "Silver Linings Playbook" Russell explained his process for directing.

"Everybody does it differently. I think some people do it, you know, everybody does it different. For me I had to learn, it took me all my life to come to this point to make these three movies. To learn that these are the movies that I feel from my heart. I had to make the other movies I had to lose my way, I had to get lost. I had to find - and then I had to wake up again. That's what happened to me, that's what happened to my characters," said Russell.

The film festival will also honor film maker Paolo Sorrentino.
