In a show of solidarity with the People's Republic, Chinese President Xi Jinping enjoys a meal at a bun restaurant with the locals at a Beijing restaurant.

He even paid for his own food and chatted with customers, much to their surprise. And apparently with little security detail.

Such encounters are unusual for senior Chinese officials.

Since rising to power in November, Xi has demanded officials cut down on lush expenditures, and get closer to the people.
