Jacques, a doctor, and his wife Carole live in a house in the Paris region. François and Edith move in next door. François is to take over Jacques practice.
Jacques spends a lot of time with François to show him the ropes. Meanwhile, Carole and Edith become friends.
All too soon, Jacques falls in love with Edith. She's initially disconcerted and touched by his feelings, then also begins to fall in love with him. But she doesn't realize that she's equally ''in love with herself falling in love.'' Neither does she realize that they're falling headlong into the violence of feelings.
