A Houston, Texas man went into his own pocket this week to pay off the school lunch debts of 60 students when he learned they were receiving only cold cheese sandwiches instead of proper meals because their accounts were delinquent.
Kenny Thompson, who is a tutor mentor at Valley Oaks Elementary School, spent $465 of his own money to zero out the accounts of students whose parents were unable to pay the 40 cents a day for school lunch, according to Houston station KPRC.
Thompson said he first inquired about the school lunch situation when he learned about an incident that took place at an elementary school in Utah on January 28. There, at Uintah Elementary School in Salt Lake City, a few dozen students had their lunches confiscated and thrown away after it was discovered that their accounts were in the red. Instead, they were given milk and a piece of fruit instead of a hot meal, leaving many upset, crying and embarrassed.
Thompson has tutored at several schools in the area for 10 years and was prompted to help the indebted students so they could focus on their learning.
"These are elementary school kids. They don't need to be worried about finances," he told KPRC. "They need to be worried about what grade they got in spelling."
He added, "When I left the building knowing that they were getting fed, they didn't have that stress," said Thompson. "The best money I ever spent."
