Man burns down home using stove to keep warm in Japan

Views 151

A 85-year-old Japanese man from Higashiku Fukuoka burned down his house on the morning of Feb. 4. He was trying to warm himself by placing portable gas stove under the Kotatsu. The small table, used almost exclusively in Japan, is fitted with electric heater underneath and covered with a quilt. The Kotatsu quilt had caught on fire by the time the old man had noticed.

The fire moved up the walls to the ceilings while the old man was trying to put out the fire, leaving him with no choice but to evacuate from his house. His next-door neighbours later called fire services. Half an hour later, the fire was extinguished, but his one-story home was completely gutted by fire.

The old man claimed that he was living on benefit. He just wanted to save money on electricity. Skimping has left him homeless. Is the game worth the candle?
