Iran marks the 35th anniversary of its Islamic revolution.

February 10TH is the day Ayatollah Khomeini took power of the country.

In 1979, a siege began some ten months after the fall of the U.S.-allied shah. Radical students stormed the U.S. embassy, taking 52 people hostage. They were released after 444 days. It ended U.S.-Iranian diplomatic relations.

More recently, Iran reached an interim agreement with Western powers to curb its nuclear program.

In his State of the Union Address, U.S. President Barack Obama defended his outreach to Iran saying: "If John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan could negotiate with the Soviet Union, then surely a strong and confident America can negotiate with less powerful adversaries today."
