Brazil's Atlantic Forest is one of the five forests in the world with the greatest biodiversity. But that biodiversity has been severely reduced. Less than eight percent of the original surface is considered untouched.
The Mata Atlântica, or Atlantic Forest, is home to an unusual tree, the araucaria augustifolia, or Brazilian pine. It's now been added to the United Nation list of critically endangered species. The entire number of trees is now estimated to be at most three percent of what it once was.
