In Japan, one must be at least 20 years of age to purchase tobacco and alcohol. Aeon Group, the second largest Japanese retailer, will abolish touch panel age checks when purchasing alcohol and cigarettes. According to a company news release, the system has proved troublesome to those who are obviously more than 20 years of age. The company added that shop assistants will perform age checks using sight and ID cards.
Japan's 7-Eleven was the first firm to introduce the touch panel system in 2011. Despite widespread acceptance by the retail industry, customers responded with sharp criticism of the system, complaining that it creates a lot of trouble. The system was also almost totally ineffective in stopping underage customers from buying tobacco and alcohol.
