Italy's PM pledges radical reforms

In the early hours of the morning, Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi won a crucial confidence vote for his new government.

SOUNDBITE) (Italian) SPEAKER OF THE UPPER HOUSE, PIERO GRASSO, SAYING:

"Senators present 309, senators who voted 308, 169 approve, 139 against, the house approves."

But the out-going Mayor of Florence still needs to win a second confidence vote in the lower house, where his Democratic Party holds a strong majority.

Earlier Italy's newly sworn-in Prime Minister set out an ambitious plan of change.

He proposed election law changes, tax cuts and investment in jobs to tackle Italy's ailing economy....but was short on the details.

(SOUNDBITE) (Italian) ITALIAN PRIME MINISTER, MATTEO RENZI, SAYING:

"We only have one chance and it is this one. And we say, looking into your eyes, that if we fail we will not look for an alibi. If we lose this challenge, the fault will be mine alone."
