A 29-year-old male backpacker from U.K., Matthew Osborne, is suspected of swallowing a rare and extremely valuable pink argyle diamond after stealing it in a jewellery store in Cairns, Australia, on February 15.
After reviewing CCTV footage, police caught up with Osborne at Melbourne airport. When a search failed to retrieve the $250,000 diamond, they suspected that Osborne had swallowed it. An X-ray test, however, proved inconclusive. Osborne is currently in jail until his next court date on March 19, and police are said to be watching his "movements" closely.
The diamond, which is only 0.31 carats with a diameter of 4.3mm, is valuable because of its rare pink color. It was usually kept in a safe but had been put on display at the jewelry store a few days ago.
CCTV footage appears to show Osborne taking the diamond and escaping on a bicycle. He was arrested while attempting to board a flight to New Zealand at Melbourne airport on February 20.
Osborne was escorted back to Cairns and accused of entering the premises of the jewelry store and stealing property of a value greater than AUD5,000 by the magistrate's court.
