Syria's UN Ambassador Bashar Ja'afari is now on a travel restriction while in the United States.
Ja'afari must remain within 25 miles, or 40 kilometers, of New York City under a new State Department mandate.
State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki defended the move.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) STATE DEPARTMENT SPOKESPERSON JEN PSAKI SAYING:
"As you know, and probably do know, UN delegates of certain countries are required to notify us or obtain permission prior to travel outside of a 25-mile radius, so this is not something that is out of the realm of what we've done before."
Similar restrictions also apply to Iranian and North Korean delegates.
Ja'afari has been a regular at UN meetings on his country's three-year-old civil war, which has seen more than 130,000 people killed.
